In a move to future-proof its mobile infrastructure, VodafoneZiggo has announced a landmark three-year agreement with its long-term technology partner, Ericsson.
The deal initiates a massive program to upgrade and expand the mobile network across the Netherlands, aiming to meet soaring data demands and drive national digital innovation.
The ambitious initiative will see enhancements across 3,000 sites, preparing the network for expected growth in mobile data usage. The upgrade is designed to ensure a seamless and reliable experience for users nationwide while unlocking new possibilities for consumers, businesses, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
A key component of the rollout is the deployment of Ericsson’s latest ultralight TDD Massive MIMO radio, the AIR 3255. This state-of-the-art equipment is central to the project’s dual goals of boosting performance and enhancing sustainability.
The new radio offers a dramatic 63 percent reduction in energy consumption and is 58 percent lighter than its predecessor, weighing just 12 kg for easier and faster installation. Additional network solutions will be implemented to further reduce energy usage and maintain uncompromised high performance.
The program will include the rollout of VodafoneZiggo’s newly acquired 3.5 GHz spectrum, the modernization of existing network infrastructure, and ongoing performance management. Building on an all-Ericsson network footprint, the partnership includes complete build and deployment services, with work set to begin this year.
