T2 Mobile, previously known as 9mobile, has marked a significant milestone in its recovery, gaining 290,601 new subscribers in July 2025, the first such increase in nearly two years, according to data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This boost has expanded T2 Mobile’s customer base from 2.4 million to 2.7 million, raising its market share to 1.6% and signaling a potential turnaround after a prolonged period of decline.
The resurgence aligns with T2 Mobile’s strategic rebranding in August and a pivotal roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, enabling its customers to access MTN’s extensive nationwide network. This move has enhanced service reliability and appeal, positioning T2 Mobile as a competitive player in Nigeria’s telecom landscape.
However, the broader industry faced challenges in July, recording a significant loss of nearly 2.4 million subscribers—the largest monthly decline since February 2025. Airtel bore the brunt of the downturn, shedding 2.4 million customers, while Globacom and MTN reported losses of 143,701 and 106,345 subscribers, respectively.

Industry experts attribute much of this decline to the NCC’s ongoing audit, which enforces strict regulations on dormant lines under the Telecom Identity Risk Management Policy. The policy classifies any number inactive for 180 days—generating no revenue—as eligible for reassignment after a year. This initiative has significantly reduced the sector’s subscriber base, with over 64 million dormant lines delisted since 2024.
Despite the subscriber drop, Nigeria’s appetite for digital services remains robust, with data traffic soaring to a record 1.1 billion terabytes in July. This surge underscores the country’s growing dependence on connectivity, even as operators navigate regulatory and market challenges.
T2 Mobile’s recent gains offer a glimmer of hope amid industry turbulence, with its rebranding and strategic partnerships paving the way for potential growth. As Nigeria’s telecom sector continues to evolve, all eyes will be on whether T2 Mobile can sustain its momentum in a competitive and dynamic market.
