Snapchat has launched “My AI,” a chatbot using the latest version of OpenAI’s GPT technology, that is customizable for users. My AI is an experimental feature available on Snapchat+, the company’s $3.99 per month subscription service. It will be pinned to the top of the Chat tab and can answer trivia questions, suggest birthday gift ideas, plan a hiking trip, or write a haiku.
The chatbot has been trained to have a unique voice and personality that embodies the company’s values around friendship, learning, and fun, while also adhering to Snapchat’s trust and safety guidelines.
According to Snapchat, My AI can be tricked into saying anything, and it has “many deficiencies”, similar to Microsoft’s Bing, which experienced an unnerving response from OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. However, unlike Bing, Snapchat’s My AI is a persona within the app that users can chat with like their friends, rather than a search engine.
The company has designed the chatbot to avoid biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information, but mistakes may occur. All conversations with My AI will be stored and may be reviewed to improve the product’s experience. Snapchat invites users to submit feedback by pressing and holding on any message from My AI.

“Our app reaches 750 million people per month, with 75% of 13- to 34-year-olds in over 20 countries”, the company wrote in a blog post. “Incorporating this technology into Snapchat’s messaging platform has the potential to make these interactions with AI part of what draws our community to Snapchat”.
Snapchat believes that AI can be incredibly additive to the app’s experience and foster deeper connections over time. In the short term, My AI may boost the company’s paid subscriber numbers, which recently surpassed the two million mark. However, Snapchat notes that users shouldn’t share any secrets with My AI or rely on the chatbot for advice, as it has been designed for fun and entertainment purposes.
