Safaricom’s groundbreaking mobile money platform M-PESA has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 40 million monthly active customers in Kenya as it marks its 19th anniversary.
Launched on March 6, 2007, as a simple peer-to-peer transfer service, M-PESA has transformed into a comprehensive financial ecosystem, powering payments, savings, credit, investments, and more for millions of Kenyans daily.
“Reaching 40 million monthly active customers in Kenya is a milestone we celebrate as we recommit to enabling every Kenyan to transact safely, grow their savings, and build their wealth,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC. “To us, every M-PESA transaction tells a story of someone building their future.”

The surge, adding 6 million users from the previous year, has been fueled by Safaricom’s Fintech 2.0 strategy. This includes ongoing investments in advanced technology, robust fraud-prevention measures, and innovative business tools such as Lipa na M-PESA, Pochi la Biashara, and Global Pay, which have accelerated marketplace digitization.
A key driver was the November 2025 launch of Daraja 3.0, a major upgrade to the M-PESA API platform. Shifting from basic payment processing in earlier versions (Daraja 1.0 and 2.0), Daraja 3.0 embraces the “Super App” era by enabling third-party developers to create lightweight Mini Apps that operate directly within the M-PESA Super App. This grants businesses instant access to Safaricom’s vast user base without requiring separate app downloads.
“M-PESA remains committed to ensuring that everyone has the confidence and tools to navigate life’s financial journey,” Ndegwa added.
