Kenya is in discussions with TikTok to introduce monetization tools for local content creators, following Meta’s recent rollout of similar features.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create job opportunities for young Kenyans through digital platforms. The discussions were highlighted during the launch of TikTok’s first Safety Advisory Council for sub-Saharan Africa, held in Nairobi.
The TikTok Sub-Saharan Africa team, led by Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda , Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy, paid a courtesy call to me today. We had an insightful discussion on partnerships and initiatives for enhancing online security and safety for our creative community and general platform users.
The discussions are ongoing, with some speculation about TikTok launching monetization by June 2024, though no official timeline has been confirmed.

The Kenyan government aims to empower young creators to generate income online, contributing to the country’s digital economy and reducing youth unemployment.
By engaging with TikTok to establish monetization options and ensuring content regulations are transparent and fair, Kenya is positioning its youth to benefit from the growing digital economy.
The move also aligns with the government’s broader digital strategy, despite the lack of a confirmed timeline for the implementation of these tools in Africa.
