Chinese technology company, Honor, has launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Magic 6 Pro, featuring an innovative eye-tracking AI function that allows users to remotely control their cars simply by looking at their phone screens.
Unveiled on Sunday, 25th February, the cutting-edge feature, already available in China and soon to be integrated commercially overseas, marks a significant step forward in smartphone technology.
Previously sold by Huawei Technologies before its acquisition by state-owned Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co in November 2020, Honor has primarily targeted the Chinese market. However, with the global launch of the Magic 6 Pro, the company is expanding its reach and ambitions on the international stage.
The Magic 6 Pro’s unveiling comes amidst a flurry of new product announcements from multiple tech and telecom companies ahead of the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona which commences on Monday 26th February. Focusing on generative AI, companies are hoping to revive a sluggish smartphone market by introducing innovative features that capture consumers’ imagination.
Honor faces stiff competition in China’s smartphone market, where it vies for market share against industry giants like Apple and Oppo. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), Honor secured a 17.1% market share in 2023, trailing closely behind Apple’s 17.3%.
CEO of Honor, George Zhao, has displayed confidence in the transformative potential of collaborative synergy, particularly in the era of AI. In addition to the eye-tracking AI function, Honor has also integrated the LlaMA 2 large language model (LLM) into its smartphones. LlaMA 2 is akin to ChatGPT, and can help Honor harness the power of AI to enhance user experience and productivity.
Furthermore, Honor is expanding its product portfolio beyond smartphones with the launch of the MagicBook Pro 16 laptop, featuring an AI-powered feature that enables seamless application transfer between devices.
