Guidepost, a healthtech startup based in South Africa, has introduced an AI-powered chatbot to assist individuals living with diabetes in effectively managing their condition. Diabetes affects approximately one in nine South Africans and is the leading cause of death among women while ranking as the second leading cause of death in the country overall. Given the importance of daily self-management in controlling diabetes and preventing severe complications, many individuals struggle to cope.
To address this challenge, Guidepost has developed a chatbot that utilizes artificial intelligence to offer personalized information and support tailored to the unique needs of each patient. The chatbot provides continuous assistance and personalized coaching, ensuring that individuals receive the guidance they require. Moreover, it facilitates communication between patients and Guidepost’s team of diabetes educators, who are experienced nurses with specialized training in diabetes education. Notably, certain medical schemes in South Africa, including Discovery Health, cover two consultations with a diabetes educator per year.

When diabetes is not properly controlled, blood glucose levels can remain consistently high, leading to serious and costly medical complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and limb amputations. By offering personalized guidance and support, Guidepost’s chatbot aims to empower individuals to effectively manage their diabetes and minimize the risk of these severe complications.
