Google has officially rolled out SynthID Text, a tool designed to watermark and detect text generated by artificial intelligence (AI) models, making it freely available to developers and businesses.
The announcement was made through a post on X (formerly Twitter), with Google stating that the technology can now be accessed on both the AI platform Hugging Face and Google’s updated Responsible GenAI Toolkit.
“We’re open-sourcing our SynthID Text watermarking tool,” the company said. “It will help developers and businesses identify AI-generated content.”
SynthID Text operates by embedding unique patterns within the token distribution of AI-generated text, allowing users to verify whether content originated from an AI model. In practical terms, AI models generate text by predicting the most likely next word or token, based on a given prompt. SynthID manipulates this process by modulating the likelihood of token generation, creating a watermark that can be compared with expected patterns for verification.
Google highlighted that this technology has been integrated with its Gemini models since spring 2024, without affecting the generated text’s speed, accuracy, or quality. The tool can still function on paraphrased or slightly altered content, though Google acknowledges some limitations. For instance, the watermarking may be less effective for shorter text, translations, or responses to factual prompts such as “What is the capital of France?”
While Google’s effort is significant, it’s not the only company exploring AI text watermarking. OpenAI, another major player in the field, has been researching watermarking methods for years but has delayed releasing similar tools due to technical and commercial challenges.

The demand for reliable AI text watermarking comes amid growing concerns over AI-generated misinformation and fraud. A report by the European Union Law Enforcement Agency predicts that by 2026, 90% of online content could be synthetically generated, posing challenges for law enforcement. Governments are already taking action; China has mandated watermarking for AI-generated content, and California is considering similar regulations.
As the prevalence of AI-generated content rises—nearly 60% of all web sentences may now be AI-generated, according to an AWS study—the debate over managing and detecting such content intensifies. Whether SynthID Text will become a widely adopted solution remains to be seen, as questions about standardization and regulatory enforcement loom large
