Microsoft-owned GitHub has launched a chat and voice feature for its coding app Copilot, which uses OpenAI’s language-generation tools to provide assistance to software developers. The new version, Copilot X, allows developers to ask how to accomplish certain coding tasks and receive explanations, testing ideas and bug fixes in a chat window. The update also includes OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT 4, for increased accuracy rates. The app is optimised for speed, enabling developers to maintain their workflow while using the code-completion features. The update is available to developers on a waitlist for preview.

GitHub launched the initial version of Copilot in 2021, and it contained a completion tool that suggested code snippets as a software developer typed. It has since attracted hundreds of thousands of users and has become shorthand for Microsoft’s strategy to deploy assistive technologies in a wide range of products. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot gaining popularity, more companies are embedding the research lab’s tools into their products and business strategies. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke said he hoped the software could be used in education to revolutionise how students learn.
