Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and expanding its 5G network to meet soaring data demand, marking a significant step in its shift toward a digital services-led model.
Company Secretary Tatenda Ngowe highlighted the mobile operator’s progress for the quarter ending May 31, noting that Econet leveraged its upgraded network infrastructure, financial platforms, and AI-driven solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
“AI-based applications are now central to our processes, enabling us to deeply understand customer needs and usage patterns, which allows us to deliver hyper-personalized services,” Ngowe said.

The company’s recent network modernization efforts have yielded impressive results. Data traffic more than doubled during the quarter, while voice volumes surged by 44% compared to the same period last year.
Ngowe attributed this growth to rising connectivity demand and the expansion of Econet’s digital ecosystems. “The sustained growth in data consumption highlights the critical role of data services in the future of telecommunications, opening significant opportunities for long-term value creation,” she added.
To support this demand, Econet deployed 20 new network sites and extended its 5G coverage across Zimbabwe, strengthening its infrastructure to handle increased traffic and deliver faster, more reliable services. These upgrades align with the company’s strategic focus on digital transformation and customer-centric innovation.
