Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) has appointed Jurgen Peschel as its CEO. Peschel’s appointment follows the abrupt resignation of former managing director Anthony Masunga in August 2024.He has been self-employed as a CEO in ICT, based in Switzerland, offering strategic expertise to global organizations.
Peschel served as CEO and Managing Director of 9mobile in Nigeria, leading a strategic turnaround that enhanced financial stability and enterprise valuation. He modernized IT and network services, expanded LTE coverage, and strengthened regulatory relationships. Prior, as Deputy Group CTO at Digicel Group in Jamaica, he spearheaded the Digicel 2030 transformation, optimizing operations across 28 markets and preparing for 5G.
Driving cloud-based service expansion and agile transformation across global markets,Peschel was Group CTO at Retarus in Germany. At Vodafone, he held multiple roles, including Head of Network Operating Model, Head of Operations and Business Transformation, and Head of Service Deployment, leading landmark projects like the global SAP ERP rollout and MPESA’s launch in Kenya. Earlier, he was Head of IT Operations at T-Systems and Head of Treasury IT at Deutsche Telekom.

“His unique blend of technical acumen, business leadership and cross-cultural expertise positions him to lead BTC through the next wave of digital transformation as our new CEO,” BTC said.
“The Board would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Peschel and thank Ms Boitumelo Paya for her leadership as the Acting CEO for the past few months.”
Peschel assumes the hot seat of an organisation which has struggled with growth since its listing on the Botswana Stock Exchange. During Masunga’s tenure between 2017 and 2024, BTC saw its revenues drop by 65%.
BTC also had to contend with numerous brand and organisational issues, including the public legal battle with organisers of the Born n Raised music festival and restructurings that saw hundreds of employees lose their jobs.
Peschel will officially start his role on 1 July 2025.
