Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a monumental $20 billion investment to expand its data center infrastructure in Pennsylvania, aiming to solidify U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence (AI).
The announcement was made at the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit, hosted by U.S. Senator Dave McCormick, with President Donald Trump and other government officials in attendance.
AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized the strategic importance of the investment, stating, “There may not be a bigger national security imperative than winning this technology race. The flywheel effect drives economic benefits, better jobs, and innovation, fostering prosperity across industries.”
The investment includes the development of a new data center in Salem Township, paired with financial support for the nearby Susquehanna nuclear power plant, owned by Talen Energy. This partnership ensures the plant’s continued delivery of reliable, clean nuclear energy, powering Amazon’s AI initiatives while supporting the local community. The project is expected to create over 1,250 high-skilled jobs in technology and supply chain sectors.

Beyond infrastructure, Amazon is investing in the region through its Northeastern Pennsylvania Community Fund, supporting local nonprofits focused on sustainability, education, and public health. The company is also advancing STEM education and workforce training to build a skilled local talent pipeline.
AWS is exploring innovative energy solutions, including the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Susquehanna site to enhance sustainable power for its operations. However, Garman highlighted a critical challenge: America’s aging electrical grid, with over 70% of transmission lines exceeding 25 years old. AWS is urging policymakers to streamline permitting and regulatory processes to accelerate private-sector innovation.
“Outdated bureaucratic delays hinder energy and infrastructure progress, risking U.S. competitiveness,” AWS stated. The company called for bipartisan collaboration to unlock investments vital for technological advancement and long-term economic and national security.
