Ghana has taken a monumental step toward digital transformation with the launch of 5G technology, an advancement expected to revolutionize sectors across the nation.
This significant milestone was unveiled over the weekend, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo leading the announcement alongside key stakeholders from the tech and telecom industries.
Speaking to an audience of industry leaders and government officials, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology to support Ghana’s ambition of becoming a regional digital economy hub. “This technology is more than just faster internet,” he stated, underscoring 5G’s capacity to drive large-scale connectivity and bring revolutionary services to the forefront.
With speeds reported to be up to 100 times faster than current 4G networks, 5G is set to impact sectors like health, education, agriculture, and security, potentially reshaping daily life and business operations across Ghana. The President also emphasized that 5G will play a critical role in Ghana’s Digital Transformation Agenda, which seeks to build an inclusive digital ecosystem, foster job creation, and strengthen the country’s global competitiveness.
“We are at a crossroads where digital technology is no longer an option but an imperative,” President Akufo-Addo said, highlighting that 5G will enhance the impact of national investments already made in digital infrastructure, national ID systems, and mobile interoperability.
For Ghana’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the economy, the President noted that 5G offers fresh avenues for market expansion, improved logistics, and greater scalability. He described the technology as a “catalyst for industrial growth.”
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ghana’s Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, echoed the President’s sentiments, calling the progression from 1G to 5G a testament to Ghana’s commitment to innovation and prosperity. “Each generation of technology has brought us closer, empowered us, and expanded our horizon. As we move forward, let’s harness the transformative power of 5G to foster innovation, drive economic growth, and improve the lives of all Ghanaians,” Owusu-Ekuful said.
