Netflix has announced an update that will allow TV users to customize the size and style of subtitles and closed captions. This new feature will be rolled out globally by the end of today, giving subscribers the option to choose from three different sizes and four styles/colors, including white text, drop shadow, light and contrast.
Previously, Netflix members were only able to access these options via the web, making this update a welcome addition for TV users. This is particularly important given that streaming on large screens, such as connected TVs, smart TVs and gaming consoles, accounted for 77% of globally streamed minutes in the first quarter of 2022, according to streaming data analytics company Conviva.
The ability to customize subtitles and closed captions can significantly improve the viewing experience for visually impaired, deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. In fact, a 2019 study by Verizon Media and Publicis Media found that 80% of Americans reported they are more likely to finish a video if it has captions available.

Furthermore, subtitles and closed captions can also be helpful for viewers who may not understand the language. Netflix already offers a select number of titles with Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH).
While there are many streaming services that allow users to change the size and style of subtitles, Netflix’s update is still a significant step forward. As the company continues to prioritize accessibility, this update demonstrates their commitment to improving the viewing experience for all subscribers.
