In a recent announcement, the Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority has designated three locations for the construction of expansive data centers by Google Cloud Kuwait. This move highlights the growing significance of digital transformation, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Minister of State for Communication Affairs, Fahad Al-Shu’la, expressed confidence in achieving the objectives outlined in Kuwait Vision 2023. He emphasized the government’s determination to establish fruitful partnerships with international and local technology companies, startups and innovative business leaders.

Dr. Ammar Al-Husseini, the acting director general of the Information Technology Center, stated that the strategic alliance with Google would yield significant benefits for the Kuwaiti economy, encompassing security, human and technological advancements. This collaboration will enable 114 government departments and institutions to leverage cloud services provided by Google. To ensure effective oversight, an oversight panel led by the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA) will supervise the contract, while an executive committee formed by the Minister of Communication will handle the technical aspects of the agreement.

The initial phase of Google Cloud services in Kuwait will primarily focus on digitizing services in crucial sectors such as healthcare, labor and education. Additionally, there are plans to redesign the existing information systems infrastructure. The government aims to attract multinational corporations to the country and replicate similar agreements with other foreign companies, thereby supporting youth-led projects.
