Safaricom Ethiopia has relaunched its 4G network in Arbaminch City, marking a significant step in its nationwide expansion while reinforcing its commitment to social good through a partnership with Mary Joy Ethiopia, a leading NGO supporting vulnerable women and children.
The relaunch event in the Gamo Zone showcased Safaricom’s dual focus on connectivity and compassion. CEO Wim Vanhelleputte emphasized, “We’re not just building a network; we’re fostering community resilience, opportunity, and hope.”
As part of its humanitarian efforts, Safaricom donated approximately $9,000 (500,000 Birr) to equip a new elderly care centre managed by Mary Joy Ethiopia. The facility provides essential support, including mattresses and nutritious food, for homeless elders and orphans affected by HIV and other challenges.

The ceremony was attended by Gamo Zone Chief Administrator Demissie Admasu and Mary Joy Ethiopia’s Founder, Sister Zebider Zewdie, both praised for their dedication to regional welfare. The initiative aligns with Safaricom Ethiopia’s robust financial performance, reporting a 270% revenue surge and 4G coverage reaching nearly 50% of Ethiopia’s population for the financial year ending March 2025.
Beyond Arbaminch, Safaricom’s social investments include laptops and internet for schools in Metu and aid for disaster-affected regions like Afar and Gofa. Vanhelleputte noted, “We’re more than a telecom provider; we’re a partner in Ethiopia’s development,” highlighting the company’s blend of commercial growth and community impact.
