OpenAI has launched Codex, its most advanced AI coding agent, now available to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team subscribers. The cloud-based tool, introduced in a research preview, promises to revolutionize software development by automating complex tasks, allowing developers to focus on high-value work.
Codex can write features, debug code, answer codebase queries, and propose pull requests, handling multiple tasks simultaneously. While tasks may take one to 30 minutes, users retain full computer access during processing. OpenAI is offering “generous access at no additional cost” for a limited period before introducing pricing and rate limits.
“We envision a future where developers delegate repetitive tasks to AI agents, boosting productivity and speed,” OpenAI stated in a blog post. The company sees Codex as a step toward asynchronous collaboration, akin to working with colleagues, though it noted the tool’s current limitations, including lack of image input support for front-end tasks and real-time course correction.

Still in early development, Codex is part of a growing wave of AI tools designed to handle mundane coding tasks, not replace developers entirely. OpenAI’s push into software automation aligns with its reported $3 billion acquisition talks for Windsurf, a maker of AI coding tools, which could mark its largest deal yet.
The launch underscores OpenAI’s commitment to advancing AI-driven productivity, positioning Codex as a powerful ally for developers navigating the evolving digital landscape.
