Digital Realty has forged a strategic partnership with Vodafone Greece to enhance Crete’s digital connectivity, positioning the island as a key digital hub in Southern Europe.
The collaboration, announced today, centers on establishing a point of presence (PoP) for Vodafone Greece at Digital Realty’s HER1 data centre in Heraklion, marking a significant step in strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure.
The HER1 facility, Crete’s first carrier-neutral interconnection point, will house critical equipment for submarine cable systems, serving as a vital hub for all cable landing stations on the island.
Vodafone Greece will also deploy two new fibre routes connecting the HER1 data centre to its cable landing station in Tympaki, southern Crete.
These routes will enhance capacity and reliability for subsea cable systems, creating a robust backhaul connection to HER1 and complementing Vodafone’s existing routes between Athens and Crete via Chania and Sitia.

This partnership is set to deliver widespread benefits, supporting global cloud service providers, enterprises, ISPs, content networks, and carriers with improved connectivity and reliability. The upgrades will bolster Crete’s role as a gateway for digital services, driving economic growth and innovation across the region.
“This collaboration with Vodafone Greece is a transformative moment for Crete’s digital infrastructure,” said Alexandros Bechrakis, Managing Director of Digital Realty.
“Our HER1 data centre is designed to establish Crete as a strategic digital hub, and by supporting critical landing cables and enhancing regional connectivity, we’re reinforcing its position as a gateway to Southern Europe and beyond.”
Nikos Plevris, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone Greece, echoed this sentiment: “This partnership builds on our submarine cable landing station in Tympaki, connecting Greece to the world through some of the largest subsea fibre optic cables.
By combining our infrastructure with Digital Realty’s, we’re creating a powerful foundation for Greece’s digital economy, unlocking new opportunities for communities and businesses.”
