Google Play has announced the 10 independent game studios selected for the 2026 cohort of its first-ever Google Play Indie Games Fund in Africa, following an earlier call for applications backed by a $1 million commitment.
The selected studios will receive a share of non-dilutive funding, alongside tailored technical guidance and one-on-one mentorship from Google Play specialists. The programme aims to help developers improve their games, achieve sustainable growth and introduce distinctive African stories and gameplay experiences to audiences worldwide.
The 10 selected studios are Clockwork Acorn (South Africa), Deluxe Entertainment Studios (Nigeria), Fer Factor (Nigeria), Gazuntype Entertainment (Nigeria), Disputed People (South Africa), Leti Games Limited (Ghana), Maliyo Games (Nigeria), Studio Bo (South Africa), Vetkoek Studios (South Africa) and Weza Interactive (Kenya).
Their games span several genres, including action platformers, puzzle and renovation games, story-driven adventures, rhythm-based mobile games, simulations and casual experiences. Drawing inspiration from African cultures, everyday life and creative traditions, the titles offer varied approaches to gameplay while bringing locally rooted ideas to international audiences.

The fund addresses challenges faced by independent game developers in emerging markets, particularly difficulties accessing early-stage funding and expanding distribution internationally. By providing financial support without requiring equity in return, the initiative seeks to help studios overcome these barriers and develop their projects.
Google Play said the programme combines funding with access to commercial and growth resources from Google Play, as well as tailored technical support from Unity, a leading game engine provider. This support is intended to give African developers greater opportunities to refine their games, scale their businesses and gain international visibility.
The announcement highlights Google Play’s commitment to supporting Africa’s next generation of game creators and strengthening the continent’s position in the global gaming industry. The company congratulated the 10 selected studios and expressed its support for their continued development of engaging gaming experiences for players worldwide.
