Moniepoint Inc. Co-Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Tosin Eniolorunda, has said the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is prompting a fundamental rethinking of human consciousness, arguing that the technology is forcing society to confront questions that were once confined to philosophy.

In a post shared on his official LinkedIn page, Eniolorunda revealed that his recent reflections on AI have led him to examine the nature of consciousness, particularly as experts continue to debate whether artificial intelligence could one day become conscious.

According to him, what stood out was not the question itself but the uncertainty expressed by many of the engineers and researchers building advanced AI systems, many of whom admit they do not know whether such a possibility exists.

Their responses, he said, made him realize that even defining consciousness remains an unresolved challenge.

Rather than approaching consciousness solely as a subjective human experience, Eniolorunda proposed examining it from an architectural perspective. He suggested that a system capable of continuously recording its own state, retaining and evaluating past experiences, updating itself based on new information, and pursuing defined goals could eventually develop what appears to be an internal point of view.

He argued that consciousness may not necessarily be a mysterious or mystical phenomenon, but could instead emerge from a particular type of cognitive architecture. While emphasizing that he was not presenting a definitive conclusion, Eniolorunda said the framework had helped him think more clearly about both human cognition and artificial intelligence.

The fintech executive further questioned whether society has viewed consciousness too narrowly by treating it as a binary concept—something an entity either possesses or does not.

Eniolorunda’s remarks add to the growing global conversation surrounding the capabilities and future evolution of artificial intelligence, as advances in generative AI continue to raise new ethical, scientific, and philosophical questions about intelligence, self-awareness, and the relationship between humans and machines.
