Abraham Oluwambe, Chief Executive Officer of LiFi.net Limited, has underscored the urgent need to keep African internet traffic local and strengthen cross-border infrastructure following his participation at the African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF 2026) held in Kigali.
Reflecting on the multi-day gathering of regional peers, Internet Exchange Point (IXP) operators, content delivery networks, data centre leaders and transit providers, Oluwambe said the event reinforced a shared continental mission.
“Connecting with industry leaders reaffirmed one clear mission: keeping African traffic local, driving down latency, and building resilient cross-border infrastructure,” he stated.
Oluwambe highlighted three key areas of focus that emerged from the discussions. First was the critical importance of scaling local interconnection. Strengthening intra-African routing, he noted, remains essential to lowering connectivity costs and improving user experience across the continent.

Second, he pointed to productive bilateral sessions on routing security, expanding the presence of Internet Exchange Points, and optimising peering agreements with both global and regional players. These collaborations, he said, demonstrated the value of open dialogue among stakeholders.
Third, conversations turned to future-proofing Africa’s digital infrastructure. Participants examined the role of edge computing, the adoption of IPv6, and the integration of subsea cable systems into national backbones as foundations for long-term resilience and growth.
Oluwambe expressed appreciation to the organisers, hosts and industry colleagues for creating a platform that encouraged meaningful partnerships. He described the momentum coming out of Kigali as strong and said he looked forward to converting the discussions into practical outcomes.
“I look forward to translating these conversations into active interconnections and expanded network reach,” he added. “Let’s keep building an interconnected Africa.”
