Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and MTN Group Fintech have wrapped up the Mobile Money (MoMo) Evolved Migration across major African markets such as Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda. The companies are now extending similar transformation efforts to new markets, starting with an active project in Cameroon, while also holding discussions to bring Benin, the Republic of the Congo and Zambia into the same process. Some operating companies are additionally considering a move to public cloud. Built on the Ericsson Fintech Platform, these initiatives will shift MTN MoMo from a legacy virtualized setup to a standardized cloud-native architecture, boosting performance and efficiency while creating a scalable base to support MTN Group’s Ambition 2030 strategy and the ongoing growth of digital financial services across the continent.

As demand for digital financial services continues to expand across Africa, mobile money platforms need reliable and scalable infrastructure capable of handling rising transaction volumes while maintaining consistent service availability. Following its migration to a cloud-native architecture, MTN achieved up to an 86% reduction in CPU processing overhead and database load. The new infrastructure provides a highly available platform that can support the future growth of MTN MoMo while delivering a reliable and consistent experience for consumers, merchants and ecosystem partners.

The upgraded platform simplifies operational processes and enhances performance across the board. By cutting infrastructure overhead and sharpening API responsiveness, it allows for faster integration among developers, merchants and ecosystem partners alike. This lays the scalable groundwork needed to expand digital financial services under the Ambition 2030 strategy. To date, markets that have completed migration have already seen measurable benefits, including reduced resource utilization for applications and databases, along with API response times improving by as much as 80%.
