MTN Nigeria has elevated long-serving executive Bukola Ajayi to the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO), placing one of its most critical technology leadership roles in the hands of a veteran with over two decades of experience within the organisation.

Ajayi, who previously served as General Manager, Architecture and Engineering at MTN Nigeria, takes over at a pivotal time as the company accelerates investments in cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, automation, and digital services to strengthen its position in Nigeria’s highly competitive telecoms market.

With 27 years of experience in technology, Ajayi has played a central role in shaping MTN’s enterprise architecture, digital transformation, and platform development.

In her previous role, she led architecture and engineering strategy across the company’s digital, enterprise, and customer-facing platforms that serve over 90 million subscribers. Her responsibilities included driving technology transformation programmes, ensuring platform resilience and security, and leading cross-functional engineering teams.

She joined MTN Nigeria in 2003 as an Applications Support Engineer for billing systems and rose steadily through the ranks, holding leadership positions in enterprise delivery, product development, customer experience operations, and information systems.

In her new role as CIO, Ajayi will oversee the company’s overall technology strategy, infrastructure, platform modernisation, and the continued expansion of digital services.

Commenting on the appointment, Roger Shutte, General Manager, Infrastructure and Cloud Engineering at MTN Nigeria, praised her deep institutional knowledge and hands-on contributions.

“Bukola has been part of the engine room since the beginning. Not watching from a distance. Not arriving at the end. But deeply involved in the architecture, engineering, governance, resilience and execution that have shaped Technology in MTN Nigeria over the years,” he said.

MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest mobile network operator with more than 90 million subscribers, is undergoing a significant shift beyond traditional voice and data services. The company is heavily investing in digital platforms, cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, and financial services to drive future growth.
