China is set to expand its support for Zambia’s digital transformation following high-level discussions between officials from both nations on deepening cooperation in digital infrastructure, emerging technologies, and skills development.

The talks, held between Nkula Mwanza, Director of Digital Communications at Zambia’s Ministry of Technology and Science, and Han Jing, China’s Ambassador to Zambia, signal a potential broadening of Beijing’s already significant footprint in the country’s technology and infrastructure sectors.

China has long been a key partner for Zambia in telecommunications and digital connectivity. Chinese firms such as Huawei and ZTE have played major roles in expanding telecom networks, advancing digital connectivity projects, and supporting ICT skills development initiatives. Chinese-backed financing has also underpinned broader infrastructure projects in transport, energy, and public works.

During the recent meeting, the two sides explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration across multiple fronts, including digital infrastructure development, information and communication technologies (ICT), emerging technologies, digital skills enhancement, research and innovation, and technology-driven solutions to support Zambia’s national development priorities.

Mwanza reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strategic partnerships that accelerate digital growth and innovation. He emphasized technology’s critical role in improving public service delivery, creating employment opportunities for young people, and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness.

Ambassador Han Jing reiterated China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Zambia and expressed openness to new initiatives in the areas discussed.

The discussions build on longstanding ties and could pave the way for expanded Chinese involvement in Zambia’s digital economy as the southern African nation seeks to harness technology for sustainable development and inclusive growth.
