The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has praised the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) for its contribution to the country’s digital transformation, particularly in expanding connectivity, promoting digital inclusion and developing technology skills.
The commendation followed the official launch of the National Girls in ICT Programme, organised by the Ministry in partnership with GIFEC at the Kofi Annan Training Centre in Accra. The event brought together the Minister and GIFEC CEO, Mr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer, alongside participants of the programme.
During the ceremony, the Minister congratulated 100 outstanding girls who participated in the 2025/2026 programme, with 50 beneficiaries selected from the Volta Region and another 50 from the Upper East Region. The initiative forms part of efforts to encourage more young girls to develop skills and pursue opportunities in the technology sector.
Speaking later at the Government Accountability Series at the Flagstaff House in Accra, the Minister highlighted GIFEC’s role in supporting Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda. He particularly pointed to the Fund’s contribution to digital inclusion and connectivity through initiatives such as the Rural Telephony Project (RTP), which is helping extend telecommunications services to communities that remain underserved or unconnected.
The Minister also disclosed that the Ministry, working with GIFEC, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and mobile network operators, is focusing on upgrading rural 2G and 3G networks to 4G and 5G-capable infrastructure. The upgrades will be supported by fibre and microwave connectivity to improve broadband access in rural communities.
Beyond connectivity, GIFEC is also providing support for digital skills initiatives, including the Girls in ICT Programme and the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP). Its ICT centres, regional offices, infrastructure and equipment are being leveraged to help expand access to technology education and training.
The recognition highlights GIFEC’s growing role in bridging Ghana’s digital divide, expanding broadband connectivity and strengthening digital skills development. Through these initiatives, the Fund continues to support efforts to prepare more Ghanaians—particularly young people and underserved communities to participate effectively in the country’s growing digital economy.
