Britain’s cyber chief, Lindy Cameron, has warned that China is aiming for “global technological supremacy” in cyberspace and is using its cyber capabilities to conduct intelligence and surveillance campaigns. Speaking at an annual government cybersecurity conference in Belfast, Cameron said that China’s ambitions went beyond parity with Western countries and that the country was actively seeking to become the predominant power in cyberspace.

Cameron also expressed concern about the effects of Chinese technology on cybersecurity, saying that Britain had a “legitimate concern” in this area. She said that China was using its cyber capabilities to acquire intellectual property, achieve its strategic geopolitical goals and conduct global spying campaigns.
Last month, Britain joined other Western countries in banning the use of TikTok on government phones, due to security concerns. The Chinese-owned video app, owned by ByteDance, has been the subject of increased scrutiny amid fears that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government.
