Until recently, the Republic of Togo is regarded as a country on the left side of digitalization with a slow level of technological advancement to push the country into the global digital space.
The emergence of technocrat and digital technology advocate, Cina Lawson as the country’s Minister of Digital Economy and Digital Transformation has positioned the country as a frontrunner in Africa’s digitalization and digital economy drive.
Minister Lawson is currently leading Togo through a profound transition to an inclusive digital economy.
Her initiatives as a minister have included diversifying private participation in Togo’s telecoms sector and spearheading regulatory reforms for data protection and electronic transactions. She also set up an innovation hub as well as pushed for the deployment of high-speed fibre broadband to link key institutions, including all public universities in the country.

In 2019, she became the first African woman political figure to receive the Harvard Alumni Public Service Award. She is a fervent advocate of innovative solutions to Africa’s developmental challenges and sits on the advisory board of the Digital Identity, Trade and Economy Initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
